A comic opera
Vespetta, pretty, intelligent but poor, is an unemployed chambermaid; her coquettish behaviour shapes her fate and she is currently trapped in the cage of poverty like a wild, pretty bird which is longing for freedom and independence. At that moment, Pimpinone appears… In the possibility of marriage to Pimpinone, a rich but elderly and conceited person, she finally sees the opportunity to improve her financial situation and start a comfortable life. She tries to appear to him as an honorable and modest person while at the same time entangling him with all of the possible means a woman possesses. She promises to him that she will look after his household with care and diligence. Pimpinone hires her for a trial period as a servant and finally – gets married to her.
However, Vespetta shows her true character immediately. She makes Pimpinone’s life hell: she is moody, seeks entertainment and doesn’t care that she should be fulfilling her duties as a loyal and caring wife. She shows herself to be a quite emancipated young woman of the 18 century because now she’s a wife – she claims – all her duties as a servant have been abolished and on the contrary, she now has every freedom…
Telemann’s jokey musical interlude uses the whole repertoire of a wittily written comedy.
