Folk suite
The invitation of the Janáček Conservatory of Ostrava to the second year of the music theatre festival is an honour but also a commitment for all participants. It was necessary to consider carefully the choice of a convenient title. And why just Burian’s War was selected? Well, besides its artistic value it meets nearly all pedagogic aspects the young novices of dramatic art are led to. Singing, movement and a spoken word are in a rare harmony in Burian’s folk suite. It is a play, or rather a screenplay, where students must prove their versatility. And as the representation of the whole Janáček Conservatory is in question, students of the Music, Dramatic, Singing and Dancing Departments perform roles in the play. An orchestra consists of the Music Department students. The students rehearse with great enthusiasm and the poetics of Burian’s play is a surprising discovery and his music is a real experience for many of them.
