When the seventy-year-old master of the opera Giuseppe Verdi started his cooperation with Arrigo Boito, a thirty-years-younger librettist, he had no idea at that time that this partnership would be one of the most successful of such cases in the history of opera. The inspired Boito, son of a Padova portrait painter and a Polish countess, Jozefina Radoliňská, was an Italian poet and the composer of the opera Mefistofele, the main work of Italian modernism.
